The bus station is crazy… don't let this put you off Siem Reap. There are a lot of Tuk Tuk drivers trying to get you to ride into town with them, the 500 Riels fare is only if you stay at a guest house that they take you to ! (commission will be paid by guest house, it will cost $2 - $4 if you get dropped off in town) although the bus station can be a bit crazy it is safe and no harm will come to you.
As you exit the airport there is a ticket desk for transportation into town. Taxis are $5 and a motorcycle $1, the price is the same even if you deal with the drivers directly. Some drivers will try to take you to a hotel where they will get paid commission and will tell you your guest house is shut for building work! To avoid this, when reserving rooms request an airport pick-up for the same price.
